JUNIOR HIGH

I remember Mr. Carey telling the class that Mark Spartz died. He had been sick, had missed some school, and then we were told that he died. It didn't make any sense. The whole class got quiet, and Mr. Carey said "It's a God Damn shame". I was surprised that he swore, but thought it was probably OK under the circumstances. Then Daniel Jacobs - who was one of Mark's best friends, and had already heard the news - started talking to me about some inconsequential thing. Everyone else was silent, shocked, but he seemed oblivious. I couldn't focus on his words. I just wanted him to stop talking. Finally I asked him to please be quiet.
